The Gospel According to André is the soon-to-be-released documentary of a great fashion and style icon, André Leon Talley, whose story has been told as he bares it all from his humble beginnings, coming out gay in an elite white fashion world, to his rise as Editor-at-Large of Vogue Magazine. Born the son of a taxi driver, André Leon Talley grew up in the era of the Jim Crow laws and was raised by his grandmother, Bennie Davis, who was a cleaning lady at Duke University, Durham, North Carolina. Talley attended Brown University, an Ivy League college in Rhode Island, United States and discovered Vogue at a local library. Known for his snappy one-liners, Andre is quoted as saying, “You don’t have to be born into an aristocratic family to be an aristocrat”.
The 67 year old style icon whose signature cape and impressive height easily stand out in any crowd began his career at Andy Warhol’s factory and a magazine called “Interview”. His work at Women’s Wear Daily from 1975 to 1980 is well documented and he credits Diana Vreeland as one of the driving forces in his career. The documentary also features exclusive interviews with the likes of Anna Wintour, Whoopi Goldberg, Marc Jacobs, Tom Ford, Bethann Hardison, Valentino, and Manolo Blahnik.
Also, emphasizing the presence of African American models in top fashion design shows gave him a high place in the Fashion industry, considering the impressive number of African American models who perform beautifully. Talley is known to be good friends with Kimora Lee Simmons, Mariah Carey and Jennifer Hudson. His tendency to have freedom of expression and style has greatly influenced the people around him.
This documentary is the solo directorial debut for Kate Novack but co-produced by her and her husband Andrew Rossi, with whom she has frequently collaborated on other projects. The poignant film was screened privately at the Toronto International Film Festival last year summer and will be released by Magnolia Pictures. The film is set to hit the theatres on May 25th and its already receiving positive reviews from within the industry.
