American actress and rapper Dana Owens popularly known by her stage name Queen Latifah, lost her mother yesterday. In a statement to Essence magazine, the Emmy Award winner confirmed that her mom, Rita Owens died of heart failure.“It is with a heavy heart that I share the news my mother, Rita Owens passed away today. Anyone that has ever met her knows what a bright light she was on this earth. She was gentle, but strong, sweet, but sassy, worldly but pragmatic, a woman of great faith and certainly the love of my life.”
Queen Latifah shared the story of how they found out her mother had heart failure last September in an interview with Essence. “My mom was diagnosed with heart failure. It was a complete shock to us… It was the last thing we expected, but she passed out in school one day. You know, she was a high school teacher, and she kinda took a dive one day. Initially, it was shock and fear, and then it was like, ‘Ok. What do we do?'”.
Queen Latifah encouraged people to take the 5 question quiz on the What The HF homepage that helps people discover if they have heart failure. They both had been active in creating awareness for people with heart conditions and been involved in the American Hearts Association’s Public Service Announcement (PSA) video for “What The HF” campaign.
Our thoughts and prayers are with her and her family in this difficult time.
