UK presenter and singer Jamelia has opened up about enduring a life of “hell” after making controversial comments over plus sized clothes on ITV’s Loose Women. In the candid interview the 35-year-old made the shocking revelation that not only had she received death threats, but that even her teenage daughters had been dragged into the resulting backlash.
It was back in April 2015 that Jamelia, commented that she didn’t think shops should stock bigger clothes and “facilitate people living an unhealthy lifestyle”. Her comment sparked an outcry on social media with calls for her to be axed from the popular lunchtime show.
But now Jamelia, who is reported to live in a five bedroomed house in Barnt Green, Bromsgrove, has revealed in an exclusive interview with OK! Online that as well as receiving death threats even her address and her children’s school address was posted online in the controversial fallout.
Speaking at the launch of the Llana Beach Resort in Cape Verde, Jamelia said she had been “really scared”. She said: “I had to maintain a positive frame of mind. It really did affect me for the worst. I got death threats, I had people putting up my address online. I even had people telling them where my kids go to school to come an meet me. I was really scared.”
Jamelia, whose daughters are 15-year-old Teja, and Tiani, aged 14, blamed modern technology for making it easier for her to be targeted in the aftermath of her comments, but said she had now moved on.
She added: “Times have changed and we live in a time where people can affect you like that now. Before I might not have been aware of it, but it allows you to get used to the time we’re in. It wasn’t a great time for me but I’m stronger for it. You live and you learn.”
