Despite the fact that they recently started preaching size diversity by casting Ashley Graham for their fall campaign, H&M stopped selling plus-size inventory in its 11 New York City stores a few months ago, according to Revelist. The company did not make an announcement at the time of its decision, but when confronted by shoppers from Revelist, store clerks admitted that their shops had stopped carrying plus sizes, which can now be purchased online only.
In a bid to remedy the situation a spokesperson provided the following statement: “H&M’s product range has grown in the past few years, with e.g., an extended sports offering, a new beauty assortment and our interior concept H&M Home. This means not all stores have room for all our fashion concepts. The assortment in the stores is evolving as we continuously assess the product mix, which is decided by each store’s specific prerequisites when it comes to e.g., its size and the customers’ requests. We refer customers to our online store hm.com, which includes all our fashion concepts, and a broader assortment.”
A few people that have taken to Twitter to voice their disappointment with the brand’s decision, here are some of the comments;
The brands actions has raised many questions like; Why is stocking pillows more important than plus size clothes? Why do plus size women have to pay for shipping with the likelihood of returning their online purchases when they don’t fit? As opposed to just trying them our in the stores once and for all. Basically it’s doesn’t make any sense to feature a plus size model in your campaign and not deliver the same level of diversity preached. If this is H&M’s way of saying that plus size women don’t deserve to come first, they it simply won’t stand with us.
